Wardens open satellite Bike Shed project in All Saints and it’s a hit!

Wolverhampton Bike Shed, with the support of Local Neighbourhood Partnership Wardens in All Saints have launched a second project.

IMG_1159Wolverhampton Bike Shed has been running at Bradmore Recreation Ground for the last 3 years, a community based bicycle repair scheme where members of the community can bring their old, disused and broken bikes and get them fixed for a donation or for free. It is run entirely by volunteers and survives on donations of time, bikes or money.  We also take donated bikes and recycle back into the community giving them a new lease of life. A volunteer member stated “It’s a fantastic scheme and gets very busy which provides a great networking opportunity for bikers in the community, as well as an opportunity to get our bikes fixed for free!”.

Neighbourhood Wardens Peter Littler, Jackie Pickup and Leon Senior noticed a gap in the market in All Saints, and set about to get themselves trained.  They negotiated with Wolverhampton Bike Shed to open a second project ‘Bike Shed- All Saints’ which they agreed to run.  They then spent the last 6 months getting trained and volunteered to gain experience.  They also sough support from All Saints Action Network for space and Ettingshall Community First funding for set up costs.

They opened the doors to the container on Saturday 26th October on the car park of The Workspace, All Saints Road, All Saints.   Leon Senior, who is running the project in All Saints said “We are keen to start getting members of the community involved in volunteering on the project and get free training to level 2 in Cycle maintenance.  They will gain work experience by using the skills they have learned to fix the bikes during the sessions”.

Leon, Pete and Jackie are eager for residents to visit them and see what they do.  They will operate every other Saturday from 10-12.30pm.  Please check out the calendar on the homepage.

Simon Beech, and Jo Maggs, the co-founders of Wolverhampton Bike Shed said “we  are delighted with the wardens support in setting up a satellite project and anyone is welcome to come along with their bike or just to have a look at what we do.  This means there will be a bike shed every Saturday over the 2 location”.
